I AM going to train for the next four years, getting in the best shape possible. No, I know guys older than you in both. And they are my friends and aren't slowing that much.
If you are that washed up at 26, then something is wrong. This is while I suffered a jump injury, car accident and stay on after I had a building collapse on me in Afghanistan. I humped and lead my guys as a grunt. It's in your mind and if your decent shape, you'll be alright.
Not to mention these guys still do p. Have you seen what they have to get on an APFT vs. When was the last time you seen one win a marathon in New York or Boston. Answers to your questions. Rangers will probably see more combat than all of the Special Operators. They are geared almost exclusively for combat. Delta recruits from Rangers, Special Forces and the 82nd Airborne.
My understanding is that they recruit about every 6 months from the units. It is also my understanding that you pretty much have to be recommended by your command to even try out. So you'll have to be a squared away soldier to get in.
Good luck on your endeavors. Mental toughness is one of the most important thing, but your body has to be able to keep up. You will not only run everywhere you go but you will be running with a back pack and fast.
Shin splints, knee tendonitis, and foot problems occur in those who do not have a running base of at least 25—30 miles per week. Prepare your legs and your lungs by putting in the time — and the miles. Run distance and run it fast. The runs are not very long, no more than 10—12 miles at the very most, but we moved out. He continued, "I am not sure if this is still the case but if guys want to be successful I would suggest they get out and do some intervals in addition to their longer runs.
Two things will give out on you if you are not prepared — your lungs and your legs. Mix in both a lung and leg workout with running and leg PT. Repeat up to 5—6 times or build up to it over time depending on a logical progression. Carrying around back packs, logs, and performing injured man drills, you need to have a strong back. Will he leave his wife statistics
Exercises like dead lift, hang clean, farmer walks, fire man carries, and body drags will prepare your lower back for lifting weight and walking with it. Be prepared to stand up all day — not even sit down at all. Also see the New Lower Back Plan for a calisthenics based back plan to build upon. Know how to read a map and use a compass.
SFAS is all about time and moving to your points quickly. You need to be able to move out when you are in a time crunch or are stuck in a draw. To prepare, put 45lbs in your ruck and move 4 miles as fast as you can.
A good goal is to get 4 miles in under 35 minutes. If you can cover that distance during SFAS it's a game changer. This isn't everyday but a very extraneous event that gets a lot of guys to quit. I would recommend doing a lot of push presses, snatches and light weight military presses to get ready.
The weight isn't heavy, just very repetitive. Learn to work under the log as a team and it helps. Really muscle bounds guys could get the weight up no problem but got smoked really quickly into these events.
Swimming is a passable event in the course. You have to be able to swim 50 meters in a pool with boots and a uniform. If you are a weak swimmer, get to the pool and do some laps. This was one event that snuck in and got a few people because they did not incorporate it into their workout plan. You can be the fastest and the strongest and crush the course physically, BUT if you have an attitude and not a team player, you will not be selected to go to the Q Course.Tw200 jetting
The biggest reason I say this is they are now doing mostly crossfit workouts in the course. So if you have a little bit of a crossfit background you will be able to keep up during PT. You still need to put in the time with running, rucking, and more rucking and running.
My SF buddy mentioned. As you can see it's a big test and is taken all at once. So you have to have some serious chest strength to knock it out and be able to ace a 5 mile timed run. Take these recommendations seriously. I'd like to thank them for the recommendations. For you future Spec Ops warriors I wish you the best of luck and would like to remind you to keep working hard to prepare for the first step of a career in the Spec Ops world.User Name Remember Me?
How old is the oldest guy who has been selected in SFAS? I'm 36 and considering applying I wouldn't mind being the oldest. I figure why bother doubting myself. I'm in great shape on the yo AFPT chart and what the hell better to try and fail than not try and never know I was really just curious if I would be the oldest to try and possibly be selected or of there was an older candidate who had blazed the trail before me There is a 40 yr.

Got out with a torn knee ligament. Now I'm 40 and the thought of going through the pipeline sounds intriquing. Although I doubt the Army would even let me enlist at this age. I had two NG guys in my 18D course who were in their early 40's.
They both recycled which isn't uncommon but did end up making it through to the end. I will out last you IMO it is a person to person thing I was in 19th Group several years ago. We had several guys who went through SFAS and the Q course in their late 30s and one guy in his early 40s.
Age is not an issue. Level of fitness, heart, and determination are.

He was however in his 50's when he went to combat diver. You're right, he is a hard old hillbilly.People well beyond their teens seek military service. In my opinion, age does matter but not necessarily in the way many people think.
Typically, the reason why people do not finish SEAL training is they were underprepared — that has nothing to do with age. The age limits are fine.
In my opinion, the year old candidates have a harder time than the older candidates. Even some candidates on the younger side of the age bracket are still growing and susceptible to many running overuse injuries at a higher rate than others. Knowing how to play with pain is part of the game for all successful students.
Seeking medical advice before it gets so bad that you fail events is something you need to understand and be open to. The human body is far more capable at getting into better physical conditioning all areas years passed 20 years old or less. It just requires thorough preparation, focused mindset on goal accomplishment, and getting it done. Remembering how many hurdles you had to jump through just to get the opportunity to serve in the military, qualify for Special Ops training, and years of preparation should be a constant in your head.
There will be days that make you question your abilities, but you have to keep pushing yourself forward IF you really want it. Age waivers are available on a case by case basis. Here is a short list of ways to stand out among the crowd. Scores in this area and a recruiter will likely take you seriously and take the time to move the waiver up the chain of command. It is possible to get through your training program with running only a few days a week, but your risk future injury.
The focus is to run shorter and faster runs in the week and a long slower run at a comfortable pace on the weekend. Most of the time, I receive emails from people who are seeking to pass their PFT, and just as many who wish to max out their If you like to train hard, consider a mix of these options for the day of the PT Test options after you take the test.
Military Fitness Tactical Fitness. Does Age Really Matter?InU. Paul Broun Jr. R-GAtried to push through legislation that would allow people of any age to join the military as long as they could meet the minimum health and fitness requirements. The House voted against the military age restrictions measure. Broun introduced the bill after speaking with an unnamed ultra-marathon runner who was denied enlistment in the Army for being a few months over the maximum age.
He was also petitioning on behalf of his Congressional colleague and fellow Georgia Rep. Phil Gingrey, who tried to volunteer as a military doctor and was rejected despite his experience as an obstetrician. Gingrey will turn 70 in July. Those still serving in the military are not exempt from their VA Loan benefits.
At age 66, Broun still serves as a doctor in the Navy Reserve. The Air Force, for example, raised its maximum age. See the age requirements for Active Duty enlistees of each branch below:. In general, the Defense Department restricts enlistment to those 35 and younger. Prior enlisted service members can subtract their previous years of service from their age in order to extend eligibility.
For example, the current age cutoff in the Air Force is This means that a year-old veteran with four years of prior service experience would still be eligible to reenlist. She said they are not only more likely to become injured, but also take more time to recover than their younger counterparts.
On one side, I can see the merits of having older, more experienced soldiers in the ranks, especially if they are just as physically capable if not more so than the younger generation. On the other hand, it is difficult for me to imagine how a year-old enlistee would get along with peers who were less than half his age. There are also the incredible physical demands of the military, especially when it comes to jobs like infantry. As the need for troops wanes or grows, it may ultimately make sense for the military to continue to enforce the age restrictions and give the younger generation a chance to serve.Forums New posts.

Just a thought: I've been out of the Marines for 10 years this December, but even though I am still working the GWOT from another angle, I miss the camaraderie, intensity, discipline, and plain ol' job satisfaction of the military.
I currently work with tons of former guys from "color" teams and I seriously have the itch to go back into the mix. At 36, am I too old to go for the X-Ray program? I don't mean from the Army policy standpoint, but from a "my old ass will be broken" standpoint. Fitness wouldn't be too hard to get back into fighting shape.
